Bay Area Rising is at the intersection of art, spirituality, and activism!
Who We Are
Bay Area Rising is a powerful feminist network of artists, spiritual leaders, and activists dedicated to ending violence against women and girls.
BAR was formed in 2012 as a call to action from VDay’s One Billion Rising movement, based on the staggering statistic that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than ONE BILLION women and girls.
Our events catalyze community to inspire, heal, increase awareness, educate, and raise funds for front-line service organizations that serve women and girls.
This has included: IDEX, 1000 Mothers to Prevent Violence, the American Indian Child Resource Center, Himalayan Sisterhood.
And in 2016 we are focusing on Black Lives Matter, and several local groups that empower girls.
Bay Area Rising is dedicated to the principle that we must keep having these performances until violence against women and girls is eradicated from our planet. As Arundhati Roy says “Another world is not only possible, she is on her way. On a quiet day, I can hear her breathing.
