  • Emeryville’s school district has had its troubles in the past and is dealing with plenty of challenges today. In September 2016, it celebrated the completion of a project it hopes will make for a better future.

Officials joined parents and students at the opening of the Emeryville Center for Community Life, a $96 million complex that houses a K-12 school, a health and dental clinic, and a community center — all to serve a district that drew fewer than 700 students last school year.

The school and community center house an array of amenities — electronic whiteboards in every classroom, a dance studio, a swimming pool designed for children and seniors, and the health and dental clinic. There’s also a soccer field with a base made of organic cork instead of recycled tires, which would be cheaper but has become the subject of health concerns.
